One-click imports from anywhere: introducing the Preplani extension

· · 3 min read

Turn any YouTube video or article you're reading into a structured Preplani learning plan — in one click, without copy-paste.

Copy-paste is where learning momentum dies

You're watching a talk on YouTube. It's exactly what you needed. You want to turn it into a proper study plan on Preplani — chapters, tasks, notes.

So you copy the URL. Switch tabs. Log in. Find the right goal. Paste the URL. Wait for extraction. Come back to the tab. Realize you lost your place.

By the time you're set up, the moment is gone. That's the problem the Preplani browser extension solves.

One click. Any page.

Install the extension and you get a small Preplani launcher on every YouTube video and article you visit. Click it, pick a goal, done — the plan starts building in the background while you carry on reading or watching.

No copy-paste. No context switching. No lost momentum.

What it works with

  • YouTube — any video, any length. Uses on-page timeline chapters when they exist, transcript when they don't.
  • Articles and blog posts — Substack, personal blogs, docs, newsletters. Anything readable.
  • Paywalled and logged-in pages — the extension reads what your browser can already see, so Medium members-only posts, corporate wikis, Notion pages, and internal docs all work.
  • PDFs open in the browser — same deal.

This last one is the biggest deal for a lot of readers. Server-side extraction can only see what a bot can reach. The extension can see what you can reach.

How privacy works

This is the important part.

The extension does not send anything to Preplani until you click Send.

  • No background collection.
    • No telemetry on which pages you visit.
    • No content leaves your browser unless you explicitly click the launcher and confirm.

Once you click Send, the page's readable content is uploaded, the extraction runs, and the plan lands in your account. That's it. Nothing else is sent, before or after.

The extension only asks for the permissions it strictly needs (activeTab, storage, scripting) — no access to your browsing history, no access to other tabs, no host permissions outside of preplani.com and youtube.com.

Installing it — three steps

  1. Get it from the Chrome Web Store. Click "Add to Chrome" and accept the permissions prompt.

    1. Open Preplani in a tab and sign in as usual. The extension auto-connects to your account and asks you which goal new imports should go into by default. You can change this any time from the popup.
    2. Visit any YouTube video or article. The Preplani launcher appears in the corner. Click, pick a goal, done.

That's the whole flow. First-time setup takes under 30 seconds.

What's next

Chrome is live today. On the roadmap:

  • Firefox — same code, MV3-compatible. Aiming for the following release.
  • Safari — takes more work due to Apple's extension model, but planned.
  • Podcasts and video platforms beyond YouTube — Vimeo and podcast players are next.

If there's a source you'd love to import from, reply to any Preplani email and let us know — it helps us prioritize.

The extension is free. It always will be. It's the single biggest UX improvement Preplani has ever shipped, and it's designed so you never have to think about copy-paste again.

Install it, forget it's there, and just click when you find something worth studying.
